SUMMER OF THE BUCKEYE WHISTLE—A Middle-Grade Mystery Adventure:

Kristen, almost thirteen, makes up headlines to fit her immediate circumstances and writes letters to God. And she already has her life planned.  She is going to become a journalist for The Washington Post or some other important newspaper. She is already a reporter for THE HOOT, her middle school paper. The next step is to win a contest by writing the best summer story. The prize: Editor of THE HOOT for the coming school year.

Then her plans fall apart when she has to spend the summer on Bearwallow Mountain with her grandparents, because  “It’s a place where NOTHING EVER HAPPENS.” She arrives on Bearwallow full of prejudices against the mountain people, then becomes entangled in a mystery. Who is the rockthrowing treeclimber on Dismal Creek?  Why do she and her cousin Clay receive a vicious threat at a death wake?  What are the Brown brothers hiding on Dismal Creek? She finds a new friend who can carve beautiful buckeye whistles and imitate the bird songs of the mountains. But where do his true loyalties lie? Will he betray her trust? She and Clay are kidnapped by a gentle mountain man who plays both classical music and bluegrass on his fiddle. And where does her Grampaw fit in the mystery? Is he hiding something too?

This could be the story that will cinch the contest. But when the puzzle is finally unraveled Kristen finds that God has taken her life in a totally different and delightful direction than what she had planned. Soft bound; 69 pages

TERROR ON THE TURNPIKE –A Middle Grade Adventure

At last! Tommy is thrilled at the prospect of his perfect summer vacation. His mom has to take a summer class at the local community college. And he is looking at two full weeks to ride with his dad on his tractor-trailer without his bossy twin sister, Tina. Maybe all summer, if things work out like they have planned. No nagging, no criticizing, no being embarrassed in front of others. What could be better than that?

Then things change. Tina’s aunt, with whom she was going to spend the summer, becomes ill, so Tina has to go with Tommy and their Dad.

The next two weeks find the twins trying to coexist in the 8ft X 8ft cab of a Freightliner Classic. Sometimes it is almost unbearable for Tommy, but after encountering and surviving a runaway truck, the rescue of a lost cat at a toll booth on the Chicago beltway, and Tommy meeting the girl of his dreams, they begin to tolerate one another. Then  their Dad gets very ill on the Oklahoma Turner Turnpike and passes out at the wheel. Can Tommy and Tina in their terror forget their differences and work together to get the rig off the road? Soft bound; 38 pages
