Inspirations From The Mountains

July 14, 2008

     "Carry Me, Daddy!"

When our youngest daughter, Laura, was about three years old, it was a popular family activity on late summer evenings for Emory to take the children who wanted to go for a walk up Kiwi hollow to the blackberry patch. This was always a big help to me to have the crowd out of the house so I could clean up the kitchen. Usually Laura held tight to her daddy's hand, but soon her short little legs would grow tired and she would beg, "Carry me, Daddy. I ti-rud!" So up on Emory's shoulders she would go. Her arms would wrap around his head and her legs would dangle down on his chest. There she would ride until they reached the berry patch. Then, almost as fast as Emory could pick the berries and reach them up to her, she would gobble them up and beg for more. When everyone had had their fill of blackberries they would all trudge home, except Laura, who was still enjoying her free ride on Daddy's shoulders.
The farther I travel on this road of life the wearier I get. Yes, God has blessed me beyond measure, but there have been so many physical losses, so many sleepless nights, so many tears have been shed, so many heartbreaks over family problems, that the farther I travel the more I feel like that little three year old girl. So I am learning to reach up to my heavenly Father and say, "Carry, me, Daddy! I'm so tired."  And you know He does. He has given His promise to do just that, and He keeps His word. Even to your old age I am He and even to grey hair I will carry you. I have made and I will bear. Even I will carry and will deliver you.(Isaiah 46:4) So often I have felt His arms raising me up and carrying me. But He doesn't stop there. He takes me to the berry patch and hand feeds me until I regain my strength. "He shall gather the lambs with His arm, and carry them in His bosom, and gently lead those that are with young." (Isaiah 40:11)

So, weary traveler, reach up to your Father and He will carry you and give you the strength to go on.
