Inspirations From The Mountains
by Rebecca Somoskey

I have been privileged to spend a lot of time with our two youngest grandsons, and they have taught me much. Recently, part of Hagen's homework was to put one of his spelling words in a sentence. The word "nine" was at the top of the list. "Don't look, Granny," he instructed. I looked at the wall. When he had finished, he uncovered his writing. His sentence was, "Sometimes Granny acts nine."
We had a big belly laugh over that one, but I had to admit that I am at that time in my life when Hagen and Landon are enjoying their first childhood, and I am struggling with my second one. We are just passing each other along the way, but we have so much in common. That is why we understand each other.
Here are some examples of incidents in this passing.  When we are together playtime is the priority. I tease them about their morning bed heads; they tease me about the skin flaps on my underarms. They rejoice over an inch of growth; I lament over shrinking another inch. They celebrate the day they can graduate from pull-ups to big boy underwear; I am thankful for Depends. They have selective hearing; I am hard of hearing. They are secure in the provision of their parents; I am thankful for Social Security. Curious George is one of our most favorite television shows. We can sit in the floor without a care and build Lincoln Log houses or have a demolition derby with miniature cars. I shower them with love; they reciprocate. And they have the same relationship with their Paw Fuji.
Why such a big deal? Because we have extra time their parents don't always have because of the necessity of working to provide. We have already experienced life at it's best and worst, and survived. So, because of our interaction, we can sow into their lives the faith of our long years of walking with the Lord.
I encourage you, grandparents; use every precious moment together to make the passing with your grandchildren count.

2 Timothy 1:5 I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois, and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.
