Inspirations From The Mountains

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity. Psalm 133:1

Once again I must take my hat off in honor of the mountain people! I have been doing that for thirty-five years now. Being a transplanted Texas cotton picker, I thought I had it all together. (Many Texans have weakness about those things.) But all I had was a lot of puffed up pride. When friends learned that my mountaineer husband was moving me back to Appalachia they warned me that the mountain people are poor, illiterate, backward hillbillies who spent much of their time feuding among themselves. But since I had always wanted to live in Virginia, I looked forward to relocating here. I felt I could really have a ministry there because I could teach the folks so much.
Surprise!! It wasn't long before I realized the good folks of the mountains had far more to teach me than I had to teach them. They embraced me and loved me in spite of my many short comings. From them I have learned about inner strength, resourcefulness, tenacity and the value of family bonds.
I saw this exhibited again a few weeks ago when L.C., Tammy and little Ethan Phipps lost most all of their earthly possessions when their home burned to the ground. It was such a blessing to watch how the church, the community and their families laid aside any differences and rallied around them with moral and spiritual comfort, and provided their physical necessities in such an abundant way. And I was amazed at the inner strength Tammy and L.C. displayed through their loss. I'm not sure I would have the strength they have shown.

So, once again I say "Hat's Off" to the mountain people. Experts have said that the Appalachian culture is the only culture in the United States that is still intact and uncompromised. I am privileged to be a part of that culture.
Yes, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity. That goes for community families and church families as well as biological families. --Rebecca Somoskey
