Inspirations From The Mountains

"Red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in His sight." The little children's song came to me one day while I was trying to remember the new names I had given Emory's pet hens. There is one for each color. Chloe is the name given to the red one by our grandson, Landon-- it was his girlfriend's name in preschool. Goldie is for the yellow one and Satin is for the black one because her feathers look like black satin in the sunshine. Next, the white one is Blossom because she is the color of our plentiful Shasta daisies. Finally, there is Dot, the speckled one. Every night Big Daddy, our rooster, leads them into the chicken house where there is safety.
Then there is Sandy. Sandy is a little brown game hen who is as wild as a tiger. She had never become one of the group, and preferred to roost outside in the woods. Eventually she built a nest out in the brush somewhere, laid several eggs and began to set. Emory could never find her nest because every time he got within a hundred feet of her she would go into a rage and try to flog him. So he left her to herself.

Then, one day, Sandy came in leading four baby chicks. She brought her little family close enough to eat a few grains of corn, then she then hurried back into the woods. No matter what Emory did to coax her to safety, Sandy insisted on doing it her way. Then a few nights ago her rebellion cost her dearly. A bear came for a visit. We heard him turn over our trash cans, then heard Sandy squawk in terror. We knew the bear had gone after her, and we feared the worst. After the bear finished all that Sandy had left was her life, one tail feather and two of her babies. Now she takes her family into the safety of the chicken house at night.

First, this is a beautiful picture of our Father's love and care. He loves all His creatures no matter if they are red, yellow, black and white, or even spotted. And if we will follow Him we can rest in safety. Isaiah 32:18 "And my people will dwell in a peaceable place, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places."  Proverbs 3:23 "Then shall you walk in your way safely, and your foot will not stumble."
But what a horrible picture of souls who insist on having their own way instead of following Christ.  So, Dear Reader, please don't wait until tragedy strikes before you trust in the Lord as your Savior. "For God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance."  2 Peter 3:9 --Rebecca Somoskey
