Twenty-five years ago I was a food addict. The Bible calls it gluttony. I thought about food most of the time and had for many years. My diet was high fat, high sugar, high caffeine, and I enjoyed every bit of it. The pounds piled on. Eventually the physical problems came, followed by surgeries, prescription expenses and much suffering, but I did not understand that my SIN of gluttony was the problem. I tried every diet and new type of exercise that came along. But the cravings were still there, cravings that I could not resist. By then I knew I was a food addict.

The turning point came when my sister, just a year older than me, died with lymphoma. Bottom line cause of death: poor diet. I began to search the scriptures and found that God has much to say about our bodies and what we eat. So I repented of my sin and began a long journey of serious praying, and putting the Scriptures into practice. (See: Matthew 6:25; Romans 13:14; Proverbs23:2; Psalm 139:13016; 1Corinthians 3:16,17 and 6:19,20.) God’s Word revealed that my problem was a spiritual one and Satan was using it to destroy my God-created body. I needed to come to Him for deliverance, much the same as any other addict would. Still I clung to my old habits, because food is a necessary part of everyone’s life, but for me it was a good thing turned bad.

As I began my journey I learned that we are a trinity just as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We are body, soul and spirit. When one part of us is unhealthy, the other parts suffer. I also learned that 20 to 30 percent of our society is obese—it’s an epidemic–and neither physical nor moral efforts alone can fix our problem. It’s between us and our Maker, and the final consequences of our disobedience to God’s laws are severe. (See: Ezekiel 16:49; Proverbs 23:1-3, 20; Proverbs 25:16 & 27; and Philippians 3:19.) Now praise God! I have been free for many years by the power of Almighty God and the perseverance He provided!

Tell me Friends, are you going to take action, or are you going to continue to pass this great transgression down to the coming generations? The choice is yours. But remember, you can break free by the power of God. I did and so can you.
