Webster’s dictionary defines a weevil as a small beetle with a long head that curves into a snout and its larvae feeds on fruits or seeds. A while back we discovered these little brown seed looking things in our large bags of rice and flour. After a careful examination we discovered weevils had gotten into the flour and laid their eggs, and the little brown seeds were the larvae. We were furious because the polluted and useless grains had to be thrown away. What a waste!
To prevent a repeat incident we replaced the rice and flour and purchased air tight containers that could not be penetrated. Now, when I open the container to use out of it, I make sure to close it securely because one little crack in the cover is all they need to slip in.
A few days later it occurred to me, “What a profound spiritual lesson there is in this experience.”Out of my heart comes the grain and fruit of my own personal spiritual harvest—what I do for the Kingdom. Weevils ofgreed can penetrate and pollute my spirit and I become useless to God. These weevils have names, and they are Money, Power, Sex, Food, and the Praise of Men. When I crave these things they become my idols. My only solution is to keep myself under the control of the Holy Spirit as we walk together each day. He is that air tight covering that protects me and keeps my spiritual seeds and fruit wholesome so they may nourish others. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.. (Galatians 5:22)
But it’s a war that is fought in my mind. My adversary will battle me until I leave this world, for he is out to destroy. The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. (John 10:10) Thank God He has given me the weapons I need to be victorious. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnalbut mighty in God to the pulling down of strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:3-5)
So Beloved, watch out for the weevils and stay filled with God’s Spirit, so you won’t leave a crack in your cover. –Rebecca Somoskey
