Right now banners have popped up all over. Most are announcing various Halloween activities. One comical banner I saw lately was on the side of a local church announcing that “Slime Time” is here. “Trunk or Treat” is also becoming a favorite church banner. Remember just a few weeks ago we were looking at the Cedar Bluff and Richlands Festival banners.
Banners announce that something important is about to happen. When our military marches into an area their banner is always our wonderful flag. It says, “We are proud to be Americans and we are here to help!”
The Bible tells us about a different kind of banner, but it is the most important of all. Isaiah 59:19 tells us, When the enemy comes in like a flood the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard (banner) against him. It also tells us in Song of Solomon 2:4 His (God’s) banner over me is love.
I do not know what that means to you, Friends, but to me it says that if I want to defeat my enemy, the evil one, I must let the Holy Spirit fight my battles. I like to think of it this way, Any time I am facing a battle if I will call on Jesus, He will send the Holy Spirit and he will immediately raise the banner of love high, to announce that something important is about to happen. Then He will march into the fray and put Satan on the run.
Lord, what grieves You most is that we, too often, march into the battle carrying our own banner that says, “I can do this myself!” Then we end up in defeat, and wonder what went wrong. From now on, remind us that You are still bearing the banner of victory. Amen
We will rejoice in your salvation, and in THE NAME OF OUR GOD we will set up our banners! Psalm 20:5
