Inspirations From The Mountains

November 30, 2009

Everybody knows you can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear! A least that’s what my Mama always told me, and what I tell myself every time I check my reflection in the mirror. I check it only when absolutely necessary. At 70 years there are too many wrinkles, grey hair, eye bags, sagging skin and other aging signs. So I have to compensate. It’s taken me many years to learn my lesson, but I am realizing that a beautiful spirit is much more valuable than a beautiful appearance, and only Jesus can change the spirit.

First I had to admit that my spiritual life resembled an ugly sow’s ear, was totally useless for anything,  and that I needed His help. Once I did that, He pulled me out of the pit, cleaned me up and is making me into a silk purse, as shiny as a pearl. He also brought  me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps. He has put a new song in my mouth—praise to our God. (See Psalm 40:2-3). Now I must keep myself shiny by abiding in Him and letting Him live through me. Daily cleansing through prayer and the Word is the key.

I’m still learning, but sometimes I neglect to abide in Him, and when I do I become soiled, and the silk purse starts to get ugly once again.  2 Peter 2:22 says: But it has happened to them according to the true proverb; “A sow, having been washed, returns to her wallowing in the mire.”

One more thing, if I give what is holy to the dogs; and cast my pearls before other swine they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear me to pieces. See Matthew 7:6. Then who knows. I may just catch the deadly swine flu and be doomed.
