Me Thinks My Thoughts Are Gonna Kill Me
“As he (man) thinks in his heart so is he.” Proverbs 23:7 NKJV
byRebecca Somoskey
They slink in an ever tightening circle just outside my small fire, growling, snarling, their eyes reflecting the light like demon eyes. Hungry saliva streams from their jowls and drips to the ground below. I know these wolves will devour me if they can get close enough. I can read their names, branded into their foreheads like so many tatoos. Self-pity seems to be the leader of the pack. He is followed by Anger, Hate, Resentment, Revenge, Unforgiveness, Selfishness, Discouragement and Despair. An army of destroyers from the pits of hell. I shout and lunge forward just outside their reach, my arms flailing like a maniac, trying to chase them away. They stagger backward for only a few seconds then rush in again. I scream, “My thoughts, my thoughts, oh God!! They’re gonna kill me!” I turn my face toward heaven and beg, “I can’t stand it any longer. Please help me.” I drop my head and wait. After a few moments of silence a gentle voice seems to whisper. “Come closer, child. I am the Light. Come closer to the Light. The destroyers cannot touch you if you stay in the Light. They fear the Light. Make the firelight stronger. ” I jump toward the nearby wood pile, snatch a log and toss it onto the waning fire. The blaze surges up. I add another, then another, then load my arms full and throw them into the middle of the now blazing inferno. A song of rejoicing pours forth from my throat as the wolves back farther and farther away. Victory! Sweet victory at last! The battle for the child of God is in the mind. And our thoughts circle us whether we are busy or idle. The light of God is kindled by the logs of His Word. What kind of logs am I using to drive away the killing thoughts? Here are a few that I use. You may think of others to add to the list. Log #1. I play songs of praise on my CD player and sing along. The joy of the Lord is my strength. Nehemiah 8:10 Log #2. I memorize scriptures by writing them on index cards and posting them in plain sight-on my refrigerator, on the mirror above my bathroom sink, on my cupboard doors, on the dash of my car, any place where I can see them easily. You may have others you like better. (Bible verses: Phil 4:8; Is 26:3; 2Tim 1:7; 2 Cor 10:4&5; Luke 12:29) The Word of God is quick and powerful, sharper than any two edged sword. Hebrews 4:12 Log #3. I have a memorized list of blessings that I repeat. Log #4. I refuse to let myself become idle. If I have nothing to do I plan something profitable and challenging. Log #5. I bring my list of needs for others before His throne one by one. By focusing on others needs I forget myself. Will the pack return? Yes. Just when we think they’re gone for good they rush in again, and the battle rages on. SO KEEP THE FIRE BLAZING AND STAY IN THE LIGHT!!
