The mournful howl pierced the darkness. “The coyotes again,” I mumbled and rolled over. But the howling sound came again, sweeping around the corner of the house with an angry force that shook everything. It’s the wind,” I cried. Sadness washed over me. “The destruction that follows this one will take some time to clean up.” But, thank God, our only serious damage was a crooked chimney, which can be repaired. We didn’t even lose our power or telephone.
Other folks in several counties around us were not so fortunate. Thousands were without power for several days. Schools were closed, and the pictures in the daily newspapers were heartbreaking. But the winds we’ve experienced lately are nothing compared to the winds of adversity that are sweeping across our nation. Winds of corruption are tearing our families, churches, governments, education and media to shreds. Confusion reigns, so that we have no idea how to help ourselves. One says this, another says that. Sometimes, when I’m confused, I can’t help but shout, “When in trouble or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout!”Often I throw up my hands and cry, “I can’t believe we have let our wonderful nation come to this.”
Surprise! It’s here! But be encouraged friends. God is in control. Then His disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!” But He said to them, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” Then he arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. So the men marveled, saying, “Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey him?”(Matthew 8: 25-27)
What we really need is another wind similar to the Day of Pentecost. (See Acts 2) The people were all in one accord, waiting. Then the wind came and all began speaking in a tongue they had never learned. This was the sign that the uncontrollable tongue (James 3:8) was now controlled by the Holy Spirit. And what were the results? People of other lands heard the gospel for the first time in their own language, then the disciples went everywhere spreading the good news with boldness. Miracles followed. As the good news spread many believed. Some even lost their lives because there was no compromise. Everything had changed for the better because of the wind of Pentecost.
Beloved, will you join me in seeking for this wind on behalf of our nation?—Rebecca Somoskey
